Growing Media in Hydroponics

Choosing the best growing medium that should serve the right purpose depends on many variables. The type of system to be used, what kind of crop will be grown, and the local environment are just some of the many deciding factors when selecting a growing medium. There may be several media that will work equally well for specific needs.

Below are the most popular types of growing media.

1. Oasis Cubes

These lightweight cubes are a growing medium designed for both seeds and cuttings. They are similar to rockwool used for germination, but do not need to be pre-soaked. The medium has a neutral pH and retains water very well.

The cubes are designed as a starter medium and come in three sizes. It is quite a versatile growing medium as it can be transplanted into many different types of hydroponic systems (or into soil).

2. Coco Fiber and Coco Chips

Coco fiber comes from the outer husk of coconuts. Previously considered a waste product, it is one of the best growing media available. It is rapidly becoming one of the most popular growing media in the world. It consists of powdered flakes of the coconut itself. It is the first fully "organic" growing medium that offers top performance in hydroponic systems. It decomposes very slowly, so it provides no nutrients to the plants growing in it, which is ideal for hydroponics. Coco fiber is also pH neutral, retains moisture very well, yet allows good root aeration.

Coco fiber comes in two forms - coco fiber and coco chips. Both are made from coconut husks, the only difference is in particle size. Coco fiber size is approximately the same as houseplant soil, while coco chip pieces are more like small wood chips.

The larger size of coco chips allows for more air pockets between individual pieces, which provides excellent root aeration.

There are many advantages - it retains greater oxygen capacity than rockwool, but also has excellent water retention capacity compared to rockwool, which is a real advantage for hydroponic systems that have occasional irrigation cycles.

Coco fiber also has a high content of root-stimulating hormones and provides some protection against root diseases, including fungal infection. Dutch growers have found that a mix of 50% coco fiber and 50% expanded clay pellets is an ideal cultivation medium.

When purchasing coco fiber, it's important to pay attention to its quality. Lower grades of coco fiber are commonly available, which have high sea salt content and are very fine-grained.

This lower grade coco fiber can lead to unsatisfactory results when used in a hydroponic system.

3. Perlite

Good old perlite! It has been used for many years as a soil additive to increase aeration and soil permeability. Perlite is a mined material, a form of volcanic glass that, when rapidly heated to over 900°C, transforms into granules that look like popcorn (the water that evaporates in the process creates countless tiny bubbles).

It loosens, moistens and aerates soil or growing substrate.

Perlite is one of the best hydroponic growing media. It is used alone or in combination with other media. Perlite is commonly used with vermiculite (a 50-50 mix is a very popular medium) and is also one of the main components of soil mixes. Perlite has good drainage properties, making it a good choice for wick-type hydroponic systems. Because perlite is very light and floats, it may not be the best choice on its own as a growing medium for flood and drain systems. Perlite is also relatively inexpensive.

The biggest disadvantage of perlite is that it doesn't retain water well. This can result in it drying out faster between waterings. Perlite dust is not favorable for health, so it's advisable to wear a dust mask when handling it.

4. Vermiculite

Vermiculite is another mined material. It is a silicate that, like perlite, expands when exposed to very high heat. In its natural state, it resembles mica rock, but when rapidly heated, it expands due to the generation of interlaminar steam. As a growing medium, it is very similar to perlite, except that it has a relatively high cation exchange capacity, which means it can hold nutrients for later use.

Like perlite, vermiculite is very light and tends to float. Vermiculite is most commonly used in combination with perlite, as they complement each other well. Vermiculite retains moisture (approximately 200 to 300% of its weight) and perlite doesn't, balancing the growing medium so that it holds water and nutrients well, while still providing roots with sufficient oxygen. A 50/50 vermiculite and perlite mix is a very popular medium for hydroponic drip systems, as well as flood and drain systems. Vermiculite is inexpensive.

The main disadvantage of vermiculite is that it retains too much water to be used alone. This can suffocate plant roots if used directly.

5. Sand

Sand is actually a very common growing medium used in hydroponics. Since its particle size is smaller than regular rock, moisture doesn't drain as quickly. It's often added to growing media, allowing better drainage and providing structure. It also helps add weight to the mix and adds certain density. It can also be used alone in hydroponic systems. When sand is used this way, it's considered sand culture, which is a variation of gravel culture, where the sand used primarily to anchor plants in growing beds or trays is much finer than gravel growing medium options.

It's advisable to use the largest grain size of sand, as this allows better root aeration by increasing the size of air pockets between sand grains. Sand is also commonly mixed with vermiculite, perlite, and coconut fiber, which also helps with root aeration.

6. Rockwool

Rockwool, also called mineral wool, is one of the most common plant media used in hydroponics. Rockwool is a sterile, porous, non-degradable medium, composed mainly of granite or limestone, which are heated, melted, spun into threads and strands like cotton candy. The mineral wool is then shaped into blocks, sheets, cubes, or slabs. Rockwool is a long-used hydroponic growing medium, especially when it comes to planting seeds or clones. Before use, it must be pH balanced. This is done by soaking the cubes in pH-balanced water. Rockwool is manufactured to allow perfect air flow to plant roots and prevent them from being compressed in the cubes.

A major advantage of rockwool is its absorbency. It can stay moist for several days without regular watering. However, care must be taken to prevent it from becoming oversaturated with water. This could lead to suffocation of plant roots and also to wood rot and root rot.

The disadvantage, however, is its continuity – if we imagine a one-meter-long mat in which we place 3 plants, and one of them dies, it's very likely that the rotting roots will start spreading mold to the roots of healthy specimens and thus threaten the final harvest.

7. Expanded Clay (LECA)

Expanded clay is a non-degradable sterile growing medium that retains moisture, has neutral pH, and also connects the nutrient solution to plant root systems. It's not the cheapest medium for hydroponic growing, but it can be cost-effective if growing is a long-term hobby or investment. After harvesting your garden, this hydroponic growing medium can be cleaned, sterilized, and reused for new plants. Its many advantages and ease of use mean it's available in almost every hydroponics store. Be careful not to inhale dust and rinse well before use.

8. River Stones

River stones are not porous, so they don't hold or retain moisture in the root zone of hydroponic systems. The stones are irregular, so there are plenty of air pockets between them and the roots can get lots of oxygen, but water drains away easily through them. The stones won't absorb moisture, so you'll need to adjust irrigation cycles to prevent the roots from drying out between watering intervals. River stones are suitable to combine with coco coir or other growing media that absorb moisture and thus help the stones retain moisture longer.

Due to the excellent drainage properties of stones, they are very suitable to use with other hydroponic growing media for drainage that might otherwise become waterlogged. A layer of stones at the bottom of the growing container will keep the growing medium placed in water at the bottom of the container from becoming oversaturated with water.

9. Pine Shavings

Pine shavings are an inexpensive hydroponic growing medium and many commercial growers use it. Generally for hydroponic drip irrigation systems. The larger the shavings, the larger the air pockets will be between the shavings, and the better aerated the roots will be. Pine shavings are a wood product, so they easily absorb water, which can easily cause waterlogging. Therefore, it's advisable to make sure the system has good drainage so the shavings aren't sitting in water. If they are sitting in water, it's good to place a layer of stones at the bottom of the container to help with drainage.

10. Composted and Aged Pine Bark

Pine bark is a long-used growing medium in hydroponics. It was generally considered a waste product, but has also found use as soil compost, as well as a substrate for hydroponically grown crops. Pine bark is considered better than other types of tree bark because it resists decomposition better and has fewer organic acids that can leach into the nutrient solution than others. Bark is generally classified as fresh, composted, or aged.

11. Rice Hulls

This is a by-product of the rice industry. Although they are organic plant material, they decompose very slowly like coco fiber, making them suitable as a growing medium for hydroponics. Rice hulls are classified as either fresh, aged, composted and pre-cooked, or carbonized. Fresh rice hulls are usually excluded as a hydroponic growing medium due to the high probability of contaminants such as rice grains, mold spores, bacteria, and grass seeds. Any mold spores, bacteria, and microorganisms are killed and leave a sterile and clean product by drying pre-cooked rice hulls after threshing.

Rice hulls are also often used as part of growing media mixtures, such as 30%-40% rice hulls and pine bark mix. The overall pH of pre-cooked and composted rice hulls ranges from 5.7 to 6.5, which is correct in the pH range for most hydroponically grown plants. Fresh or composted rice hulls tend to have high manganese (Mn) content. However, the problem with manganese toxicity can be avoided if the pH value is higher than 5, which is below the normal value for hydroponics anyway.

12. Water-Absorbing Crystals (Water-Absorbing Polymers)

Water-absorbing polymer crystals have been used in many industries for a long time. Everything from baby diapers to the sports industry, where they are used in textile fabrics that can be applied to the head or neck to keep the skin dry and comfortable. They are also used in horticulture, where the crystals are mixed into soil to help retain moisture in the soil. Florists use them in vases to keep fresh and colorful flowers looking beautiful. When they absorb water, they look like jelly. After drying, they can be stored and reused.

Water-absorbing polymer crystals are not common hydroponic growing media, but like all others, they are growing in popularity. Mostly due to their increased availability. They are relatively inexpensive and reusable. However, used alone, they do not allow the roots to get much oxygen, as they pack together like jelly and fill air pockets. Larger-sized crystals are more suitable for use in hydroponics. The larger size helps maintain air pockets between the crystals. Also, combining river stones or other similar growing media with crystals will help increase air pockets between the crystals.

Using polymer crystals for hydroponics allows for some of the simplest hydroponic system designs, even on the most limited budgets. Simply soak some water-absorbing crystals in nutrient solution and then place them in a container. Place seeds on the crystals and you have a hydroponically grown plant. No pump needed. Just make sure there are holes in the bottom of the container and place the container in nutrient solution once or twice a week to rehydrate the crystals.
