9 Herbs to Grow at Home
Whether it's winter or summer, these herbs will spice up your life whenever you fancy them! But watch out! Store-bought herbs from supermarkets don't have much chance of further growing and survival. I recommend getting seeds and properly growing your herbs from scratch!
BASIL
You can sow delicious basil anytime during the year. It loves plenty of heat and light, so a south-facing window is ideal.
BAY LEAF
This perennial will thrive in any larger pot. Choose a location with good air circulation, which is essential for proper growth. The ideal spot for the pot is east-west facing. You can move it outside in summer!
CHERVIL
This super healthy herb will grow at home by your window without much effort. What's essential for proper growth is a temperature around 20 degrees Celsius. Unlike other herbs, it tolerates even poor light conditions.
CHIVES
The absolute number one in every kitchen! Chives not only germinate easily but are also undemanding. Sow seeds anytime during the year. A bright location is ideal, with an optimal temperature around 20 degrees Celsius.
OREGANO
This herb prefers more permeable soil, so don't forget drainage and adding sand to the substrate, for example. Choose a larger pot right from sowing. Oregano grows quickly. It requires a warm and bright location. A south-facing window is ideal. Don't overdo the watering!
PARSLEY
Parsley loves full sun. So place your sowing on a south-facing window. On an east or west-facing window, parsley will grow more slowly. Just be careful, parsley doesn't like drafts and needs plenty of watering.
ROSEMARY
This herb insists on sun and dryness. Sow in permeable soil – ideally in a 1:1 ratio of sand and substrate. Also place drainage at the bottom of the pot. Water only very little and sparingly. Always remove excess water from the saucer. A south-facing window in full sun will suit it.
SAGE
It tolerates drought and dry indoor air. It needs a bright location, ideally a south-facing window. Choose a larger pot when sowing. Sage grows quickly and when its lower leaves start turning yellow, it's a sign it needs repotting into a larger pot!
THYME
An undemanding herb to grow that won't get lost in the kitchen! Ideally sow in spring. Place the pot on an east or south-facing window. It likes full sun and tolerates drought. Ideal for summering or growing outside by the window!
