Don't Be a Stiff, Get the Right Pot!
SIZE MATTERS!
Every plant has different requirements that you need to consider carefully before buying its container. Especially when it comes to the width of the root system and the overall size and height. If you're getting a pot for something like ginger, you need to account for the fact that it will spread both in width and height. Therefore, in this case, focus on pots that will provide it with enough space while being stable. You don't want your lovely, grown ginger to tip over due to its weight and height, causing more damage than good! However, if you're planning to plant something delicate like a violet, you'll get by with a pot made of lighter material. Then you can really go wild when choosing its shape or color. A violet is simply a beauty that cares more about the aesthetic side of things, so no robust pot needed!
WHAT IF YOU'RE REPLACING AN OLD POT WITH A NEW ONE?
If you're planning to repot a grown plant into a new container, its size should be approximately one-fifth larger than its predecessor. Above all, don't overdo it – the plant might then grow mainly in its roots at the expense of everything green and flowering on the surface. And you don't want that!
NOT ALL MATERIALS ARE CREATED EQUAL
There's a whole range of materials that pots are made from. However, not every one is suitable for both indoors and outdoors in the garden. For outdoor purposes, choose rather waterproof, frost-resistant and stable ones that will protect plants even when the weather gets rough. Even better are those that have drainage holes for excess rainwater! And when it comes to houseplant pots, consider carefully how much moisture each plant will need. Wicker, wooden, unglazed and other less water-resistant materials might leak and thus damage furniture, windowsills or floors. However, they'll be suitable for succulents, for example! For orchids and similar plants requiring plenty of water, rather choose plastic or ceramic containers that won't let water through so easily.
DESIGN PLAYS A ROLE TOO
Let's face it, pots aren't just a practical matter. After all, they're also containers that are visible and so they should look good too. Given that nowadays there's a whole range of designer as well as classic pieces available in various colors, patterns, materials, sizes and shapes, don't be afraid to indulge a little and choose according to your taste. After all, even a pot can represent a nice decoration in your interior!
