Spring Lawn Crash Course!
1. Before you start working in the garden, think about your lawn. Until it dries out properly, I recommend postponing all work. A muddy and damaged lawn just means extra work!
2. Sharpen your mower! Blunt blades on the mower don't cut the grass, they tear it. Grass cut this way is more susceptible to disease attacks. Moreover, the damage will cause it to lose its green colour.
3. Mow low! The first mow should give the grass a short cut after winter. Wondering why? A low spring mow allows sunlight and water to penetrate to the roots. The grass then grows better. Don't forget to gradually increase the mowing height during spring.
4. Scarify! Scarifying the lawn removes old thatch, which is not only unsightly but also reduces the lawn's health. Scarify the lawn when the soil is dry.
5. Aerate! The right time is when the grass starts to sprout. Thanks to aeration, nutrients, light, water and air can reach the roots more easily and the lawn can thrive better.
6. Overseed bare patches! Nobody wants to look at a patchy lawn!
7. Check the soil pH and nutrient content in the soil. If you haven't had such an analysis done for at least three years, get to it!
8. Fertilise it! In spring, fertilise mainly with nitrogen, which will kickstart the lawn's growth in the right direction! Then do a second fertilisation in May, where the main component should be potassium.
