Winterizing Roses
Pruning
First, remove the leaves from the roses and shorten any overly long shoots. For this, you'll need sharp pruning shears and gloves. Cut them back by approximately one-third and remove any visibly diseased, dried out, or damaged parts. Perform the actual pruning always in spring.
Mounding
Shrub Roses
Higher frosts can seriously damage or even burn the rose. Therefore, it's very important to insulate it as much as possible.
This process is called mounding, and you'll need soil, manure, or compost to cover the roses to a height of approximately 20 to 30 centimeters. An excellent choice is mulch for mounding rose bushes. This material will prevent the soil from freezing.
If you have roses in sparse planting, simply mounding the surrounding topsoil is more than sufficient. You can add peat moss to the top part of the mounds, but don't use it as the main material you pile around the roses in large quantities - peat retains a large amount of water and if it freezes, it can tear the bark on the lower parts of the shoots.
Perform mounding approximately in mid-November, and again the rule applies - to be safe, monitor the thermometer and weather forecast.
Mounding can be done this way for shrub roses, bedding roses, and climbing roses; for standard roses, you must either bend the head to the ground or wrap it in fabric.
Standard Roses
Bend the rose crown down to the ground and secure it with binding wire. Then fix it to the ground using, for example, wooden stakes or anchoring pegs. If the plant is older and can no longer be bent, wrap its crown in light-colored non-woven fabric - NEVER use foil, as it could cause overheating!
Autumn Planting
Roses can of course be planted in autumn too. The advantage is that beautiful colorful flowers will adorn your garden the following spring. If you start planting in spring, you'll have to wait a year.
However, this option is recommended mainly for experienced gardeners, as incorrect winter protection can destroy the plant. So if you want to be sure of your results, it's recommended to wait until spring for planting.
